The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was born from a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to those who suffer. Its purpose is to protect life and health, uphold human dignity, and promote mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation, and lasting peace among all people.
The Movement makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class, or political opinion. It works to relieve suffering according to need alone and gives priority to the most urgent cases of distress.
To continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement does not take sides in hostilities or engage in political, racial, religious, or ideological controversies. Neutrality helps it reach people in crisis and maintain trust in the most difficult situations.
The Movement is independent. National Societies act as auxiliaries to public authorities in the humanitarian field, but they must always maintain enough autonomy to act according to the Fundamental Principles in all circumstances.
The Movement is a voluntary relief organization not prompted in any manner by desire for gain. Its strength comes from people who serve others out of humanity, solidarity, and a willingness to help communities in need.
There can be only one Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all and carry on its humanitarian work throughout the entire territory, serving as a unifying force within society.
The Movement is worldwide. All National Societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping one another, reflecting a global spirit of solidarity, mutual respect, and shared humanitarian commitment.
